Land Rover Freelander 2

The new Land Rover Freelander 2 is designed from scratch. It replaces the original Freelander (launched in 1997). His predecessor has been the best selling 4x4 in Europe for five years and number one in sales in the UK since its launch until late 2005. The new Freelander 2 is improved in every way: performance, fuel consumption, refinement, quality and space. It is more capable both on and off the road by behavior, ride quality and comfort. It is available from € 32,700.

The Freelander 2 is the fourth all-new vehicle for Land Rover in just four years and follows the new Range Rover (2002), Discovery 3 (2004) and Range Rover Sport (2005).

A gasoline and a disesel
It has two new engines, one petrol 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder diesel and a 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.

I6 petrol engine of 233 hp is installed transversely. Its top speed of 200 km / h with acceleration from 0-100 km / h in 8.9 seconds. The consumption figure on the combined cycle is 11.2 litres/100 km. The engine is matched to a new six-speed automatic transmission with manual sequential shift CommandShift Land Rover. The Sport mode is available for drivers who want a livelier performance.

The diesel engine chosen for Freelander 2 is a 4 cylinder 2.2 liter with no less than 160 hp, maximum torque of 400 Nm and 200 Nm of torque from 1000 rpm. Consumption in the combined cycle of 7.5 litres/100 km. It is available also a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) option which reduces even more the amount of emissions. The engine is offered with two transmissions: a new gearbox six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission used with the gasoline engine (diesel version available from spring 2007).

Wider
The interior of Freelander 2 is a major improvement over the outgoing vehicle. It measures 4.50 m in length -50 mm longer than its predecessor. The rear seats are located in a position slightly higher than the forwards. The boot has a 38% more volume than the previous Freelander (755 liters with the rear seats versus 546 liters).

Its design is continuous, but with a more modern look, keep the clamshell bonnet, the roof and the basic form. The body is a five-door monocoque structure. The suspension is fully independent and uses stability control systems including Roll Stability Control (RSC), helps mitigate the risk of overturning.

The new Terrain Response system, consists of an intelligent system of quattro permanent four-wheel drive improves traction and reduces the consumption figures on the road, or Control Brakes Liberation in Grade (GRC) that holds the vehicle when we release the brake pedal on steep and slippery slopes.

Equipment
Other features and options rare in this class include: keyless starter button bi-xenon headlamps, self-steering front lighting, wipers with rain sensor and the help system in the parking lot (front and rear). The dual panoramic sunroof increases the feeling of space inside the vehicle.

The climate is part of the standard equipment in most versions, and is also available navigation system with DVD satellite color touchscreen. The equipment range includes high sound quality DAB digital radio and Dolby ™ Prologic IIx Surround Sound with fiber optic interconnects. All vehicles have a number of auxiliary audio connection (for iPods and MP3 players).

Designed by Land Rover at Gaydon, near Warwick, Freelander 2 is produced at the Halewood factory in Liverpool.

New 3.2 i6 petrol engine of 233 hp
I6 The new 3.2-liter engine, which will debut on Freelander 2, accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.9 seconds and its top speed is 200 km / h. With a maximum power of 233 hp at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 317 Nm at 3,200 rpm, significantly higher than those offered by the outgoing Freelander's V6 engine (177 hp, 240 Nm), so its benefits outweigh the model above, showing, however, lower consumption figures - 10% less in the combined cycle.

The six-cylinder i6 engine is designed to combine online configuration, theoretically offering greater refinement and smoothness. It is installed transversely, which improves the layout of the passenger compartment and provides additional space in front and behind the engine, optimizing the effectiveness of security systems.

The key to this new compact design lies in the auxiliary transmission system Rear (READ). Conventional motors actuated camshafts and other auxiliary systems (such as the alternator, water pump and air conditioning compressor) using a series of chains and straps protruding from the front of the engine. With the i6's READ system, these components are traction-engine rear side closest to the transmission, which reduces the size of the set. The result is an engine very short, measuring only 600.5 mm long. This feature greatly expands the space of the span of the engine, allowing the i6 transverse installation and assembly around the unit's advanced energy absorbing structure.

The i6 engine has a block, cylinder heads and aluminum backing plate, all structurally optimized to balance low weight and stiffness. Even the cover of the camshafts is structural, allowing it to incorporate the tops of the bearings, further reducing weight.

The i6 employs dual overhead cam 24-valve head (4 per cylinder) to provide the optimum engine breathing. This characteristic is further improved thanks to the changing profile Camshaft (CPS) which includes two intake cam profiles machined completely different in the same tree. The engine management system decides which is the most appropriate profile depending on operating conditions and driver's torque demands. A profile is ideal for driving at low speed low load and the second, marked by increased valve lift is indicated for speed and higher loads. Hydraulic Tappet a provision amending the two-piece cam profiles.

The i6 engine also includes variable valve timing (VVT), which continually modifies the overlap of the valves to offer more power and efficiency with minimal emissions. The combination of CPS and VVT gives curves with a broader torque and power.

In addition, the Variable Intake System, modifying the length of the intake duct and, what is less usual, the volume of the chamber, increasing the torque in the lower and upper end power, further enhances the ability engine breathing. 80% of the vehicle peak torque is available throughout the rev range and 256 Nm between 1,400 and 6,400 rpm.

Aluminum pistons and forged steel connecting rods operate a forged steel crankshaft with seven bearings with surfaces which are hardened by induction. The crankshaft timing gears and startup are incorporated in the flexible plate that sits between the engine and automatic transmission for a more compact package.

The READ system power is received from a gear located at the rear of the crankshaft rib which also drives the oil pump. This, in turn, drives an intermediate gear shaft that drives a shaft which carries two sprockets. The front sprocket drives the alternator and rear handles camshafts in the head, using an inverted tooth chain, and the power steering pump, coolant pump motor and air conditioner compressor grooved through a belt.

The fuel injection system uses four high-precision micro-nozzles per cylinder, each with a diameter of 0.29 mm. Has ability to inject a large volume of fuel when high performance is required - up to 250 cm3/minuto - and act with complete certainty whether the performance requirements are minimal, helping the i6 Freelander 2 to achieve a consumption figure in the cycle 11.2 litres/100 km combined.

The base engine has been developed in Bridgend, Wales - together with the new V8 engine family petrol Land Rover-the i6 has been extensively developed to meet the harsh demands of Land Rover SUV, which has required improving their ability to cope with dust, mud and water and their tolerance of operation in steep angles.

A new 160-hp turbo diesel TD4
The new 2.2-liter turbo diesel TD4 has a maximum power of 160 hp (versus 112 hp 2.0-liter engine of the outgoing Freelander) and maximum torque of 400 Nm (260 Nm compared to the previous model), their performance have been improved. It needs 11.7 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h for the manual version (14.4 seconds in the previous Freelander) and its consumption in the combined cycle (7.5 liters per 100 km) is lower than the Freelander Previous (7.7 liters) although its power has increased by 43%.

The TD4 includes cylinders with variable turbulence, fuel injection with common rail "third generation" new Garrett variable geometry turbocharger, cylinder block cooling jacket and balanced shafts installed in the crankcase. The engine complies with the regulations of the EU4 emissions and uses a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that improves performance even more (all data quoted refer to the diesel engine without DPF installed).

The maximum torque of 400 Nm is available at 2,000 rpm. The torque curve is flat, with 80% of the maximum power available from the middle of the rev range and an impressive torque of 200 Nm from 1,000 rpm.

In automatic versions, the Freelander 2 TD4 delivers extra power to push the accelerator pedal depth thanks to the overboost function temporarily increases pressure turbocharger. The new turbocharger with variable geometry (BNT) improves the response at low speeds, providing more mid-range torque in the higher revs and power at the top. The small turbine blades are very light which further reduces turbocharger lag making it virtually undetectable.

The combustion engine is very efficient with piezoelectric injectors, a high pressure fuel injection technology and the turbulence variables, which reduces combustion noise and the pressure inside the cylinder. The piezo injectors precisely control fuel supply system while the common-rail injection "third generation" is capable of injection pressures of 1800 bar, about 30% more than the systems of "second generation". These systems can provide large volumes of fuel at maximum load, which is why these motors offer better performance, and fuel economy-than previous diesel engines.

The new cylinder head optimizes the turbulence throughout the rev range. In many diesel engines, it is necessary to achieve the balance between an acceptable amount of turbulence at low revs avoiding excessive turbulence at high speeds. On the TD4, an innovative system off the inlet ports solves this problem by improving the turbulence and combustion efficiency both at high and low speed.

Each cylinder has two inlet ports. The low speed through air applied at an acute angle to create turbulence at low revs. If it requires a greater flow of gas, opens the second channel, providing additional air without increasing therefore the turbulence.

The block, double shirt is made of cast iron which not only improves its resistance but significantly reduces the noise transmitted, acting as if it were a double glazing. The handle is aluminum alloy while the engine cover, made from lightweight polypropylene, contains a layer of foam to absorb specific noise frequencies. This is a simple but very effective mechanism to reduce by half the engine noise.

The crankshaft, made of rolled steel, is supported by five main bearings. A dual-mass flywheel absorbs engine vibrations. At the other end of the shaft, the torsional vibration damper isolates the valve train and the auxiliaries. To improve even further refinement of the engine, the TD4 uses two balancing shafts, housed in the crankcase, which revolve in opposite directions. These shafts, rotating at double speed as the crankshaft, counteract vibration characteristics of a four-cylinder engine providing a smooth and refined.

The engine, which debuted in 2006 - is the result of the collaboration agreement between Ford Motor Company and PSA, the man behind the TdV6 also installed on the Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport. As with the i6 petrol engine, the TD4 has been specially developed to meet the demands of wading, running in extreme angles and protection against dust and mud.

The two Freelander 2 engines are available with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the TD4 is also available with manual gearbox six-speed (diesel models with automatic transmission will go on sale in spring 2007).

Both transmissions have been specially developed to meet Land Rover's dual role as a vehicle designed for road and driving across country and transmit power to the intelligent system of quattro permanent four-wheel Freelander 2.

The automatic transmission AWF21 Aisin Warner six-speed is a lightweight and compact unit is characterized by a remote ventilation system, deliberately located above the line wading of Land Rover (500 mm deep). The exceptional quality of change is ensured by a new Control Module fully integrated electronic Transmission.

This module uses different settings change depending on whether you selected the automatic mode or manual CommandShift sports and whether the vehicle uses one of the special Terrain Response programs.

• In sports mode, automatic transmission is programmed to hold the lower gears for longer and reduce facilitating faster acceleration.
• CommandShift allows sequential manual gearshift.
• With Terrain Response special programs activated, apply different settings depending on the chosen mode. The Control Module also manages the transmission torque converter lock varies depending on the mode selected Terrain Response.

The gearbox six-speed manual, available only with the TD4 diesel, is a Getrag M66 designed specifically for Land Rover. This is a four-axis model in which the choice of gear depends on a double cable, which ensures rapid and precise. The dual-mass flywheel carries a single disc hydraulic clutch (250 mm). The system automatically adjusts to maintain constant pedal loads during the lifetime of the vehicle.

The system is fully independent suspension with coil springs, shock absorbers front and rear. The direction of rack and pinion with 2.6 turns between top and cap. It is mounted in the front sub-frame to improve lateral stiffness, is adjustable in height and depth. The front sub-chassis and independent rear are mounted on rubber mounts. The shock absorbers are gas.

The Freelander 2 has 210 mm minimum headroom under the vehicle that you can overcome rocky terrain, sandy or muddy and that help you wade in water up to 500 mm deep.

Drive four
The intelligent system of quattro permanent four-wheel drive has a torque distribution between the front and rear that varies continuously to suit dynamic conditions. Only a small part of the torque is transferred to the rear wheels under normal conditions such as a straight road paved, but in demanding off-road situations, can be transmitted to the rear wheels if necessary, almost all the torque. It is an ideal arrangement that provides maximum grip in difficult conditions, while reducing traction, when it is not necessary, thus reducing rotational losses and fuel consumption.

The torque distribution is continuously adapted. So if you find mud or snow on the road, for example, adjusts torque distribution between the front and rear provide optimum traction and improved safety at all times.

The intelligent 4x4 system has been developed with Haldex, whose central coupling technology continuously modifies the torque distribution between front and rear axle through a hydraulically operated multi-disc wet clutch.

However, Land Rover wanted an electronically-controlled center coupling linking the transmission shaft to the rear differential, which could pre-geared to sleep to reduce the loss of wheel traction in spurts, quickly geared to detect loss of traction and disengaged with the same speed without compromise of stability control systems. The system would also transmit the torque necessary to meet the demands of off-road traction.

The resulting system has been used exclusively on Freelander 2 and proactively engages quickly and quattro permanent four-wheel drive. A new pump high-pressure pre-charge the hydraulic system as soon as you start the engine, enabling the 4x4 traction from the very start. This also reduces the time needed to obtain the maximum torque once it detects a wheel skating - 15 º freely rotating wheel (compared to the 60 th of more conventional units).

The Haldex unit is designed to allow up to 1,500 Nm of torque transmission. An accumulator accelerates the response of the unit. The total transmission torque can be achieved in just 150 milliseconds. In fact, the new Haldex coupling system offers the advantages of a system of quattro permanent four-wheel proactive efficiency and low consumption of a front-wheel drive system.

Adaptability
Terrain Response is a key technology from Land Rover that fits the responses of the engine, transmission, central coupling and chassis systems of the vehicle to the demands of the terrain. Thus, optimizing the transmission and maximizes comfort and traction. It is available as standard on all models except the base

The Freelander 2, the driver can choose any of four Terrain Response settings using a rotary knob:

• Driving General - suitable for driving on the road or undemanding terrain.
• Grass / Gravel / Sand - suitable for slippery conditions, on and off the road.
• mud and ruts
• Arena

Each of these configurations optimized electronic and mechanical controls adapted to the chosen field.

Terrain Response also controls the stability and traction devices as follows:

• Dynamic Stability Control (DSC): designed to help curb the transmission of torque to the wheel that loses traction, although in some off-road situations may be desirable to retain the pair even though that loss. Terrain Response automatically adjusts the DSC to maintain proper pair.

• Electronic Traction Control and antilock brakes: Terrain Response set these control systems to provide optimum grip, braking power and maximum reliability in the field concerned.

• Hill Descent Control (HDC): the latest generation of Land Rover's award-winning technology that automatically limits the speed on the descents using the brakes and improves driver control on slippery descents. The HDC is activated automatically when you select the appropriate Terrain Response programs. The rates of decline vary depending on the selected surface.

Terrain Response also changes the electronic center coupling configurations to optimize the four-wheel traction in difficult conditions. This system, operational, made its debut in 2004 in the Land Rover Discovery 3.

More powerful brakes and larger
The Freelander 2 has ventilated discs front and rear. The large front discs in the model -360 mm and 300 mm petrol in diesel-are "reverse ventilation," which means that air enters the central disc on the bell to go below the rim of this . This approach improves the thermal stability during the halt. Also the dimensions of the rear discs are remarkable - 320 mm in diameter in both petrol and diesel version. The hand brake is a device type disk drum "that uses two pads on each wheel. This provides an outstanding performance in higher than conventional systems from a single disc.

The electronic module, a key element of the control systems of the stability of the Freelander 2 constantly monitors and, if necessary, act selectively on the brakes and engine torque to ensure control over each wheel. Besides reducing the braking pressure as would an antilock brake system (ABS) conventional, the modulator is designed to help generate positive hydraulic pressure that increases the braking force in emergency situations.

Besides the four-way ABS last generation, the modulator also controls Electronic Distribution Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) which balances the distribution of braking force between front and rear, the Emergency Brake Assist ( EBA), which boosts pedal pressure when required maximum braking power, and Cornering Brake System (CBC) which improves the stability of the rear of the car under braking into a curve. It also helps monitor systems Hill Descent Control, Electronic Traction Control and Dynamic Stability Control.

Stability control
The stability control with rollover sensing is the most sophisticated technology to avoid the risk of tipping ever used in a Land Rover. A gyroscopic sensor system allows the modulator-bound mail-compare the level of change of angle of rotation of the body relative to its ideal trajectory. If necessary, rapidly increases the braking force on the outer wheels, widening the turning radius to prevent tipping.

The brake release control on Earrings (GRC) is another innovation, patented by Land Rover, which makes its debut on the Freelander 2. Connected to the Hill Descent Control, progressively reduces the braking pressure, lifting the foot off the brake on steep grades, helping the driver maintain vehicle control.

Wheels and tires
The Freelander 2 is available with a range of wheels and tires with diameters ranging between 16 and 19.

The tires are low pressure cast aluminum and its width is higher than normal. The tires are so versatile that allow them to tackle all the land. Its pressure is 2.2 bar, regardless of size, charge and speed, which simplifies maintenance. The smaller tire-available only in the diesel model is the 215/75R16, while the largest is the 235/55R19 (installed as an accessory only).

Towing Capacity
The automatic model petrol and diesel with manual transmission can carry a trailer with 2,000 kg-trailers exceeding the tare weight of the vehicle, allowing them to carry horse trailers, caravans and many medium size boats. The diesel automatic can tow up to 1,750 kg.

With more than 28,000 Nm / degree of static stiffness, the Freelander 2 has one of the more rigid body in its segment.

It uses a monocoque construction which has been made fuller use of ultra-resistant steel beams in the doors and other reinforcements than any other Land Rover. The dual-phase DP600 steel, which requires a special printing process due to its resistance "is used in the pillars, in doorways, in the side-front and on the dashboard to provide a safety cage lighter.

The twin engine bulkhead vain improves insulation and provides a clean area for components such as the ABS modulator, the brake booster and wiper mechanism.

The length of the Freelander 2 is slightly higher than -50 mm-than the outgoing Freelander. Its width has increased by 109 mm and height 32 mm.

Security
The energy absorbing zones front and rear are designed to absorb as much energy as possible during the impact. Side-impact protection is provided by the beams of the gates of ultra-resistant steel. Other important features include the sleepers of the dashboard that minimize the risk that the A-pillars to collapse on impact and the new system, Roll Stability Control.

The seatbelts include pretensioners for front seats and all versions have seven airbags. The front airbags for driver and passenger are designed to protect the head and chest and are supplemented by side airbags. Integral curtain airbags installed in the roof side structure are designed to protect front seat occupants and rear head injuries and to be thrown in case of rollover. A knee airbag protects the driver against injury from the steering column.

External protection
The Freelander 2 uses only galvanized steel panels double sided as part of treatment and anti-corrosion paint applied ever more sophisticated in a Land Rover. Includes a cosmetic warranty three-year, unlimited mileage anti-corrosion warranty and six years.

As a genuine 4x4, Freelander 2 is designed to withstand impacts and scratches. Vulnerable areas, including thresholds and lower doors, are coated with a rugged thermoplastic material. The cooling system and the engine cowlings have been protected with sturdy structural steel and thermoplastic material, respectively. The bumpers are made of reinforced polypropylene injection molded high pressure material that offers excellent resistance to heat and cold and excellent resistance to impacts and scratches.

Lighting
The standard halogen headlights use polycarbonate lenses impact resistant and scratch (a quality invaluable in driving off-road). The lenses are integrated into the body of the lighthouse to ensure watertightness. Each lamp uses a Gore-Tex membrane that allows for ventilation but not the passage of water and prevents condensation on crossings. Also available H7 halogen bulbs that provide lighting similar to daylight.

Headlamps are also available High Intensity Discharge (HID) that emit a blue-white lighting. The bulbs are filled with a mixture of noble gases (including xenon). The bi-xenon headlamps emit 200% more light than a halogen unit with half the consumption. Their life expectancy is up to 10 times longer. The HID system includes headlamp washers and automatic adjustment to ensure optimum light emission, regardless of vehicle load.

The bi-xenon headlights allow the optional self-directedness Lighting (AFS). The beam rotates in accordance with movements in the direction thus following the path of the curve and improve the driver's vision.

The tail light units form a single piece that incorporates marker lamps, stop lamps, turn signals and reverse lights. Like the headlights are made of polymethyl methacrylate, a material quite resistant to scratches.

Panoramic Roof
The dual panoramic sunroof section is optional. The front section is lifted up and slides back over the second glass panel.

The door mirrors (optional electric folding). The windshield has a thermal windscreen, rain-sensing wipers using infrared technology and washer nozzles with heat.

It has improved its quality and finish and higher quality materials used throughout the cabin. By design is similar to the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery 3.

The driving position is high. The rear seats that Land Rover calls "stadium type" provide passengers with a slightly higher than the front so they can enjoy good visibility. The narrow pillars, the dimensions of the front windshield, rear window and side windows, promote the visibility of all occupants.

Your seats
The racks of the front seats are similar to those used in the Range Rover Sport. Is available a full range of fabrics and color combinations, including leather upholstery in top-end versions.

The driver's seat of all models available range of adjustment in six movements, including height. The passenger seat has four-way adjustment. The leather-upholstered front seats have electrically adjustable armrests and optional memory addition of three positions in the driver's seat. Some versions can be ordered with effective two-stage heated seats suitable for colder environments.

The back seat is large enough to comfortably accommodate three adults and includes central armrest in leather upholstered version. With asymmetric division, can be folded down forwards twice to provide a completely flat loading area.

Cargo volume
The trunk provides adequate space for the transportation of luggage or sports equipment, from bicycles to golf clubs. A clever detail is the reversible cover for the cargo space with carpet on one side and impermeable on the other.

The total volume of cargo space is 1670 liters with the rear seats folded and 755 with booster seats (27% and 38% higher respectively than in the previous Freelander). Space has been designed from the outset for maximum versatility. For example, Land Rover has proved even if Roly (one of the big dogs tenants virtual design team) could travel comfortably. The raised floor of the cargo area prevents awkward positions by placing items in the trunk.

Inside the passenger compartment, center console includes cup holders for cans and can accommodate many different packages. Abundant space for transporting objects, including a good glove box and generous door pockets with bottle holders front and rear of 1 liter.

It incorporates new advanced technologies that ensure the best performance 4x4 in perfect harmony with the road performance, thanks to a first-class engines, both petrol and diesel, along with a new chassis architecture and suspension.

"The Discovery 3, a true Land Rover, made a clear and convincing, that is evident in its clean design, versatility and the impressive driving experience," said Matthew Taylor, global general manager of Land Rover. "Like all new Land Rover, is impressive on-road driving and is the best in its category in the field," he added.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
The Discovery 3 also apply new technologies, hitherto unknown in the 4x4 market, among which is the Terrain Response ™ system, patented by Land Rover, shown in advance in the Range Stormer concept car. This system optimizes drivability and comfort, as well as amplify the tension. The driver selected by a simple rotary control, located in the center console, one of five "scenarios" to drive: A program for normal driving, one for slippery terrain (grass / gravel / snow) and three special off-road driving (mud / ruts, sand and rocks).

The Terrain Response system then selects the most appropriate framework for advanced electronic controls and traction aids-vehicle ground clearance, engine torque response, Hill Descent Control, electronic traction control and transmission.

"Having the Terrain Response is like wearing next to an expert who helps you get the best out of the vehicle, under any circumstances, inside and outside the road," said Matthew Taylor. Another innovation is the Integrated Body-frame structure ™ (Integrated Body-frame), which allows Land Rover to deliver all the comfort, refinement and attributes of a monocoque on asphalt, while setting new standards in off-road performance. The Discovery 3 also features adaptive headlights that swivel when cornering, helping the driver to have better visibility when cornering.

BENEFITS IN ASPHALT AND FIELD
The range-topping engine is a 4.4 liter 300 hp at 5500 rpm, a specially developed version of the famous Jaguar V8 petrol engine. To suit Land Rover has increased capacity (the Jaguar engine is a 4.2) and torque (425 Nm at 4000 rpm), has reduced the possibility of entry of water and dust and improved air intake to allow fording rivers and improving traffic on highways. A Land Rover motor function should also be able to bear certain angles when driving in circumstances of extreme 4x4.

The engine with higher demand in Europe will be the new, soft and supple Land Rover turbodiesel, 2.7 V6 with 190 hp at 4000 rpm. It is a unit with common rail technology and latest generation variable geometry turbocharger, and a torque of 440 Nm at 1900 rpm.

Both engines provide powerful performance on the road, with quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The gasoline engine is coupled to an automatic transmission 6-speed "intelligent shift", available as an option for the diesel, which mounts a box standard 6-speed manual also.

The use of an independent air suspension with variable height in all versions improves highway driving and in field. The suspension is set up, helping to enter and exit the vehicle and raising the ground clearance for rough terrain.

MORE VERSATILE
"The design of Discovery 3 is derived from its own capacity, because all you see is for a reason," said design director of Land Rover, Geoff Upex, "We give priority to passengers and the driver environment superb interior, with more vertical clearance and comfort. It has a large glass area, resulting in the luminosity of the interior and better visibility, "he continued.

It is also clearly a Land Rover. "No one could confuse this vehicle with anything else was an absolute priority," said Upex. "And while I had to look radically modern, round and distinctive." As unique and common in the Land Rover design, we can mention his bold vertical and horizontal elements, the stepped roof (to increase the visibility and interior space in the rear seats), the asymmetric rear tailgate (to reduce load height when the bottom is closed and narrow the gap at the bottom of the boot when open), the location of the air intake on only one side of the body, and huge glass area.

The rider also benefits from the traditional high driving position of Land Rover products, while all passengers in the rear seats have progressively higher than the front as in a stadium-for easier viewing. The optional third-row seat adds comfort and accepts without question two adults.

Its great doors facilitate entry, being the back door that used to access the second and third rows of seats. The clever design of the seats further enhances its versatility. The two rows of rear seats fold forward, leaving the floor level to facilitate loading possibilities.

The new Discovery 3 comes with a single 5-door body, three trim levels S, SE and HSE and 3-year warranty with unlimited kilometers. There will be 3 versions with 2.7 turbo engine of 190 hp and two V8 petrol engine 300 hp. The gearbox six-speed sequential automatic is standard on the V8 versions and optional on the TDV6, which assembled in series, a six-speed manual gearbox.

Land Rover Freelander

The Land Rover Freelander is now available in the dealer network with five trim levels - E, S, SE, and Sport HSE -, two body styles - 3 and 5 doors - and three engines.

The award-winning Freelander Land Rover has undergone a thorough review and improvement process for 2004. The changes include a new interior and major external changes, characterized by front and rear of the new design. It also adds to the range a new version for the European market, the Freelander Sport, the more agile and sporty model produced by Land Rover to date.

The most obvious improvements are seen in their design. The front bumper, headlights and front grille are newly created and adopted the unique presence that already anticipated the new Range Rover. The new headlights, and dual beam clear lens, similar to those of his older brother, the Range Rover, and improve the light intensity by 70%. The front bumper, redesigned, are now colored to match the bodywork.

The rear bumpers are also now painted in body color and tail lights have been placed in a higher position on the bumper, improving their visibility and reducing the likelihood of being obscured by road grime or dusty roads .

The interior of Freelander 2004 also has been extensively renovated to improve the comfort and luxurious feel. Inside we find a new dashboard, new dashboard, new groups of switches, new door trims in five-door versions, new comfort seats on most models and new upholstery. But not only has improved the passenger compartment. So has, and remarkably, the feel of the materials.

As for the body, remain available three-door version, with removable hardtop or folding canvas roof, and five-door version. As before there are three engines: two engines produced in 2001, the V6 and the award-winning 2.5-liter turbodiesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and as basic option, the original gasoline engine 1.8-liter four-cylinder, notably improved.

In Europe, offer a new version of the Freelander, the Sport. This version, which uses new alloy wheels 18 "uses a lowered suspension and rigid which reduces roll and improves the sensations the driver. The result is a more sensitive behavior and tracks on dusty asphalt or gravel.

The 2004 Freelander remains the king of the compact 4x4. Its quattro permanent four-wheel drive and plenty of advanced electronic systems, including Descent Control and Electronic Traction Control, allow you to ford rivers or climb and descend slippery slopes, and provide the driver exceptional control when things tough.

Lancia Delta 1.8 Di TurboJet

The Lancia Delta features a new turbo engine with gasoline direct injection: the 1.8 Di Turbojet with 200 HP (meets the Euro 5 emissions standard). That engine is associated with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The fastest of the entire range
This engine delivers a maximum power of 200 hp at 5,000 rpm and maximum torque of 320 Nm at 1,400 rpm. Combined with an automatic / sequential 6 speed, the new 1.8 Di Turbojet with 200 HP offers a maximum speed of 230 km / h, get an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.4 seconds, consumes 7 8 l/100km on the combined cycle and achieves CO2 emissions of 185 g / km.

The 6-speed automatic transmission is distinguished by being compact and light change, besides having been designed with a focus on limiting consumption: first, the use of a low friction oil resulted in increased efficiency and, by Moreover, the sixth gear was placed to be especially helpful when driving on the highway. The specific management software can recognize the different road conditions and adjust driving through the following functions: braking assist, recognition of the slope, curve, desire for sport or comfort driving. It offers the possibility to select three different programs: "Winter" (for low-grip conditions), "Norm" (a mode for driving in normal conditions) and "Sport" (whichever sport that allows for faster gear changes both to raise as to lower relations). Logically also has an automatic mode. With the manual mode (TIP) change can be operated from the shift lever or with few controls on the steering wheel.

The 1.8 Di Turbojet with 200 HP is a new direct-injection turbocharged engine that gradually incorporate various models of the Fiat Group. This engine stands out mainly for its high performance, low consumption and CO2 emissions adjusted.

More precisely
This engine incorporates technology "Scavenging" means a solution obtained by controlling and optimizing at all times the engine parameters as the strength, the position of the two-phase inverters, the advance of start-up and commissioning phase of injection; practically be defined accurately and time of crossing angle of the valves in order to generate a flow of direct air intake manifold to discharge in a short time to drive the supercharger. This allows better use of overfeeding on conventional turbocharged gasoline engines. The system is managed using a new engine control switchboard, which has been implemented a new software that controls all parameters. The result obtained is as follows: The maximum torque at 1500 revs increased 70% compared to traditional turbo engine and response times are reduced, approaching that of a naturally aspirated engine.

Direct injection reduces the temperature in the combustion chamber by evaporating gasoline strongly decreasing the sensitivity to detonation. This achieves better performance even in the presence of a high compression ratio quietly (equivalent to 9.5) and ensures content with consumption regime "biased". Thanks to the double injection reduces consumption and emissions. And thanks to the direct control of the fuel, it manages to avoid that, during production of the Scavenging, part of the gas directly at the discharge end with harmful effects on the functioning of the catalyst. Finally, the injection system has a new second-generation high-pressure pump (capable of running a gas pressure of 150 bar) and new injectors with 7 holes to ensure a better vaporization at all engine operating conditions.

Dual variable valve timing
The two-phase continuous variable camshafts on the intake and discharge phases to optimize any scheme, engine load, while minimizing the consumption and emissions. Moreover, combining the two drives the turbocharger, is achieved by managing the strategy of "Scavenging" defined the right junction during transients. After a couple unexpected request by the driver can expedite the best possible engine response and at very low revs.

The engine has a new generation turbocharger attached to an innovative discharge collector type "Pulse Converter that takes full advantage of the discharge pressure waves to increase the torque at low engine speeds. Both the manifold and the turbine are made of steel Microfund to reach very high operating temperatures (up to 1020 º C), very important to reduce consumption during operation on highways at speeds medium / high.

Suctions are designed and optimized by using mono and computing technologies have enabled three-dimensional reach the correct level and high turbulence. That is possible right mix between air and gasoline (besides the combustion is accelerated and stabilized properly even from low engine speeds). Also the combustion chamber has been optimized for this engine turbo taking large areas of "squish" and minimizing the relationship between surface and volume with beneficial effects on combustion efficiency. Finally, the discharge chutes are designed to work in harmony with the discharge collector and to maximize their effect "pulse converter.

Low friction
The 1.8 TBi 200 hp has been designed with the objective of minimizing friction losses. The pistons have elastic bands reduced tangential load and used art materials to minimize wear. He has also designed a head cylinder in which roller rockers were introduced that reduced contact losses by 65% at 2000 revs over these in the cylinder heads Twin Spark engine. The mechanical optimization with very long rod, combined with a moderately short run, has ensured lower maximum vibration typical of four-cylinder engines during operation at high regimes. This has allowed not to use balance shafts contrarrotantes subsequently improving propellant consumption.

The specific torque (185 Nm / l) is very high and is among the highest for engines currently available. In addition, you can also say that the value of maximum torque (320 Nm) is reached at 1,400 rpm. The power output of 115 hp / l is reached at a relatively low regime of 4,750 rpm, remaining constant up to 5500 rpm.

Thanks to the double injection the value is very low emissions to meet the Euro 5 limit with a relatively small catalyst, which has positive effects on performance.

Lancia Delta

Delta is a historical name representing one of the icons in Lancia's automotive history, but also a mathematical symbol that stands for change, difference, evolution. In this sense, Lancia Delta 2008 Range is the first vehicle of a new Lancia philosophy, which bet on a car with elegance and style. The current has little or nothing to do with this mythical GTi of the 80s and 90s that marked a milestone in the World Rally Championship.

The new Lancia Delta, which hit the market on July 18 and will be available with 3 different finishes and numerous customization options. All proponents of the new Lancia Delta 2008 Range are turbocharged and combined with gearbox 6 speed (manual, robotized or automatic), Lazio engines Delta 2008 Range available shortly after launch will be three: 1.4 TurboJet 120 hp and 150 hp (both petrol) and 1.6 turbodiesel 120 bhp MultiJet (Euro 5), also combined with advanced robotic hand. To these will be added later, two absolute novelties: the 2.0 MultiJet 165 bhp and the 1.9 MultiJet Twinturbo of 190 hp, both engines and the new automatic "Selectronic" will be available in autumn.

Subsequently the range will be complemented by another innovative engine: the 1.8 Di Turbojet with 200 HP (motor "direct injection gasoline combined with a modern 6-speed automatic). All under Euro 5, these three engines Lazio confirm the brand as a benchmark in terms of technology and innovation throughout the automotive scene.

The new Lancia Delta 2008 Range opens a new ESC (Electronic Stability Control), control system stability changed that, with respect to devices available so far, adds many important functions, for example the LTF (Linearization Torque Feedback) strongly improves the sense of ownership of the vehicle in a curve, especially at high speeds, and the TTC (Torque Transfer Control), an innovative function which - by simulating electronically the presence of a self-locking differential - improves cornering traction and understeer noticeably avoiding ensures greater driving dynamics.

Abe also noted that the ESC control system always intervenes in a "discreet" by combining with the DST (Drive Steering Control). Indeed, the "electronic address active" and makes corrections automatically and also controls oversteer on slippery surfaces.

The new 2008 Range Lazio Delta adopts the SDC suspension (Synaptic Damping Control) on the one hand significantly improve ride comfort, particularly raising filtering on disconnected routes, moreover, further enhancing driving pleasure by improving the handling at all conditions (the system actively regulates the geometry according to the type of road and driving efforts).

Complete the endowment of the Lancia Delta range 2008, the parking system semi-automatic (SPS stands for Semiautomatic Parking System) - controls the direction the driver leaving the task to operate the brake and throttle to complete the maneuver - and the system HALF ( Haptic Line Feedback) who, speaking on the wheel, warns the driver of the running lane departure.

To make it more customization, the customer of the new Lancia Delta 2008 Range can choose from more than 1,000 customizations. A range born by combining 3 versions (Argento, Oro and Platino), 4 different seat coverings, 3 colors of interior environment, 5 types of alloy wheels, 12 body colors and 12 combinations "bicolor".

Delta: All a myth
The Giugiaro-magic pen gave birth in 1979 the legendary Delta Lazio 2008. Among the features unprecedented showing for that period, highlighting the shields comprising front and rear bumpers, which were made of polyester resin reinforced with glass fibers.

The mechanical architecture was front wheel drive with transverse engine, independent suspension on all four wheels, brake system of two crossed circuits and rack direction. At the time of its release was available with two engines: a 1.3 75 bhp and 1.5 to 85 hp. Both had a distribution with controlled front camshaft and head of light alloy.

The first Lancia Delta 2008 Range measured less than four meters in length and provided a standard equipment including electric windows. Delta Production began in Lingotto factory in Turin, later was transferred to the establishment of Chivasso, where there was a section of paintings among the most advanced in the world, an electronic control system of the body assembly and an automatic system that guarantees absolute quality consistency of the subgroups. Versions out there "personalized" LX and in 1982 the Delta GT with 105 hp 1.6 engine. The vehicle has four disc brakes servo-assisted, and reaches 180 km / h.

In 1983, four years after the debut, the Delta HF Turbo is born, first LaCie drive turbocharged supercharged series. The engine is still 1585 cc, but pays out a power of 130 CV that allows a maximum speed of 190 km / h.

Three years later, in 1986, the range of the model is rejuvenated and expanded with the Delta GT electronic injection 108 HP, 2.0 turbo diesel with 80 hp, with HF Turbo injection (140 hp) and the HF 4WD . The latter mark, together with the Prisma 4WD, Lazio's entry in the sector saloon 4WD tourism. He had a two-liter engine of 165 hp (208 km / h speed limit) and a mechanical edge.

The drive system consisted of a free front differential for a type epicyclic central differential distributing torque asymmetrically (56% on the front axle and 44% on the rear) for a Ferguson viscous coupling center differential applied to and a Torsen rear differential (contraction of the words "torque sensing" which means "sensitive to the pair"), a "smart" devices that can distribute torque between the two wheels depending on available grip and without ever completely block the two semiaxes . In this way the Delta HF 4WD can transfer to ground all the engine power properly. The result is a car that has great traction in slippery surfaces and directional stability and excellent road grip for ball higher.

In subsequent years, all-wheel drive Delta is enriched with a range of technical and stylistic improvements, especially given competing demands. In versions sporting the Delta is awarded between 1987 and 1992, six World Rally titles. Produced from 1979 to 1994, were built 480,000 copies of the Delta.

Lancia Fluvia Coupe

Lancia is one of the few car manufacturers that can boast of passionate and demanding customers, lovers of beauty and at the same time, deep knowledge of the most sophisticated technology. There is also a common thread to all Lancia cars: a continuing investigation of innovation linked to the most exclusive Italian craftsmanship. It is therefore an essential not only in the spirit of Lancia, but also in the very progress of the car. They show the hundreds of patents filed, the great inventions and practical achievements brought about by Lancia in almost a century.

The year was 1965. At the Geneva Motor Show Lancia introduced the Fulvia Coupé 1.2, a powerful car, balanced and quite unique for the mechanical solutions adopted. Indeed, the strengths of the model were 4-cylinder engine in V-close, the front subframe that housed the power plant, the parallelogram front suspension system and 4 disc brakes with dual circuit hydraulic brake booster.

A CAR FULL OF HISTORY
The Fulvia Coupé was a fine example of that "elegant sportiness" that has long distinguished some models of the Lancia range. Few tweaks were enough to transform the car into a road race car. So much so that even today, the public defines the acronym interchangeably with the model Fulvia Coupé HF, without distinguishing the proper models for sports activities. And the thought immediately comes to the "mythical" Fulvia Coupé Rallye 1.6 HF, which in 1972 won the Monte Carlo Rally driving with Sandro Munari and won the World Championship marks. In the following year, the Lancia model left the official competitions in 1976 and ceased production of the Lancia Fulvia Coupé, having produced 140,000 units of that model. Today, forty years after the debut of the first Fulvia saloon and thirty-one years of Munari's victory, Lancia has wanted to produce a prototype commemorating one of the models that have become famous around the world.

In addition, for the designers of the Centro Stile Lancia has always been a big dream: to re-propose the Fulvia Coupé ideally like his stylistic evolution had not been interrupted ever. The approach to the project was very clear from the outset: no nostalgic indulgence, but a reinterpretation of the key concept in postmodern and with an original style.

The freshness and dynamism of the line had to come first, without betraying the emotion he was able to convey the Fulvia, designed by Castagnero in 1965, a highly refined mixture of eccentricity, elegance, clean lines and sportiness.

A Coupe of three volumes
This is a thoroughly modern coupe, an opportunity to explore aesthetic and engineering solutions can also characterize the future production Lancia, but at the same time raise a great evocative power for whom in his day, had hoped and dreamed.

The dimensions and architecture three volumes of the Fulvia Coupé show car are practically superimposed to the previous model, but with a wider track to give greater stability and resistance to the car. The overall structure is reminiscent of Riva motorboats of the period, characterized by a truncated rear, an extremely dynamic volume and a forward split.

The most characteristic stylistic reason, the continuous molding horseshoe embracing the whole body with a purpose "outbound" on the back, has been reinterpreted by giving it a more dynamic and a tapered movement. The point of greatest tension is in the front wheel, which also concentrates all the visual weight of the car, in order to highlight the drive and the engine front, with a result that expresses the sensation of "pulling" the whole car. The development "drop" of the plant, with maximum width at the front and a tendency to narrow towards the rear truncated, contributes to this effect. Complete treatment of the volumes a long bonnet-a "greenhouse" small size "and a special distribution of mass. The Fulvia Coupé of 1965 was characterized by light volume, even more evident in the rear, while the new show car has a more muscular, but lightened by treatment of the bottom of the car "tuned" to the back.

The front, aggressive-looking, is characterized by a large chamfered hood and headlights modules consist of high technology and a "peak" shaped wing, which extends from the bonnet profile visually below the glass. The polished metal grill, where stands the great Lancia emblem, has a sporty, three-dimensional, intentionally streamlined and simplified with respect to the "brothers" less aggressive, to emphasize its role as air intake and create a full-specific relationship gaps between the elements of the front, more in tune with the previous model.

All this is complemented lines, flowing hood to the bumper, is "unite" around the lower mouth, where four cylinders runs "floating" mentioning the four air intakes to the model of the seventies. The side has a clean surface, which plays in the succession of concave and convex surfaces, and with some sturdy shoulders.

The rear, however, represents the logical conclusion of all formal treatment of the object to return a "section" could not miss the famous quote "transom" so characteristic of the previous model, praises the "escape" on the back and hidden headlamps unambiguously vertical development. Here, matching the two cylinders that pass through the body ideally like exhaust terminals, playing with transparency effects, which show two elements outgoing wing-shaped profile (discrete event "eyes" of the previous car expressive ).

NOSTALGIC FOR AN INTERNAL
The body color Ivory "three layers" contrasts beautifully with the "dark brown" skin that envelops the entire passenger compartment. The latter clearly evokes the seventies, thanks to detailed numerical control lathes iridescent controls reminiscent of the Hi-Fi equipment of the period, and essence that is of central integration of the dashboard and the bridge tunnel, the Tanganyika Frisé , a wood-looking "silky" and shimmering metallic tones.

The interior, "two squares" with additional luggage compartment under the rear tray, aesthetically inspired in the original, always with a postmodern approach and essential, without leaving aside the touch of refinement and sportiness typical of a Lancia of this type. As shown by an exclusive set of luggage made specifically for the show car by Trussardi, using quality and original panels that represent the perfect combination of humor and practicality.

The panel, consisting of two opposing structures lined by hand that embrace the integration of wood, is surrounded by a structure that extends smoothly to the back of the door panels, highlighting the plant in nautically inspired drop. The tunnel is actually the extension of the leather lining "Dark Brown" from the floor that rises smoothly to form the arms symmetrically with respect to the doors. It is a concept inspired by the seat, which characterizes the formal language of the interior. A simple "stope" in volume in the tunnel and the side armrests allow you to emerge in central, longitudinal wooden bridge where the gear lever (enriched by aluminum accents), and in the doors, the "bars" interns from closing the doors.

Rounding out the analog instrumentation all three areas with designs inspired by the world of sailing and pearl color (similar to the new Ypsilon), a "plate" metal interface that collects all infotainment and climate control functions, like the other cars Lancia range.

The three-spoke steering wheel features a metallic cylindrical airbag module and a crown upholstered in leather. Finally, the seats, sporty and ergonomic design, reminiscent of the Fulvia Coupé for the surround effect conferred by the "frame" in a horseshoe, which hugs the back providing ample lateral support.

A 4-cylinder 140 hp
The style operation conducted in the Fulvia Coupé should not be considered a pure design exercise. In fact, all exterior trim of the car have been studied to reduce the drag coefficient. The work is demonstrated by the excellent value of maximum speed 213 km / h, obtained assuming a power somewhat reduced for this type of vehicle: 140 hp at 6400 rpm

Note the lightness, guaranteed by the use of aluminum for carrying out the bodywork. In fact, as in most modern sports cars, though the Fulvia Coupé of the seventies had aluminum hood and doors for some versions HF-all exterior body panels are made with this material. This is a real technology that has been recovered using the best Italian artisan tradition in the field manual molding plate with hammer and here is a masterful performance by the manufacturer of the model: CECOMP.

In addition, attention to the lightness has reduced the weight below 1,000 kg. The Fulvia Coupé show car weighs just 990 kg, a value of paramount importance for this type of vehicle that guarantees an excellent power-weight ratio (7 kg / hp) and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.6 seconds. This obviously also translates into a reduction in consumption: for example, in the combined cycle never exceed the 7.3 l/100 km.

Finally, the prototype of Lancia is equipped with a "4 cylinder" 1.8 16v equipped with variable valve timing, and adopts a McPherson front suspension with telescopic uprights, coaxial coil springs and lower legs. The geometry, despite being relatively simple, allows Pirelli PZero Nero tires ensure a first class dynamic performance. Complete the technical picture of the rear suspension with stabilizer bar longitudinal arms, the brake system 4 disc brakes with ventilated front and anti-lock braking system.

Not implemented other "solutions" electronic assistance, such as anti-skid and stability control, to avoid compromising the purity of a sporty driving "old style" so captivating. In other words, the Fulvia Coupé comes with full rights in the collective imagination of all those who appreciate a car, even experimentally, with a great personality and appeal. And yet today, "lancistas" are recognized by the extraordinary passion and enthusiasm he shared with design, test and manufacture a Lancia car.

Lancia Phedra

The Lancia Phedra receives final touches before a permanent replacement. To catch up receives a renewed aesthetic inside and outside, greater articulation of supply and in particular the introduction of a powerful and unprecedented 170 bhp 2.2 Multijet combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an automatic change of 6 marches (the latter available in spring).

The Brake Assistance is standard and assists in emergency braking: on vehicles with ESP is a function carried out electronically by the ABS and switchboard is called HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance).

The Lancia Phedra also offers standard stability control ESP (Electronic Stability Program). In addition, to reduce wheel spin motor in case of low grip on the road, the new model has the ASR (Anti Slip Regulation), which is standard on all versions. It is the system for automatic traction control, which works at any speed and is involved in the pair, depending on the coefficient of adhesion detected. But when under conditions of low adhesion is reduced sharply the march, involving the MSR (Motor Schleppmoment Regelung) which gives the engine again avoiding pair skating derived from the wheel lock.

The collection is completed with the inclusion of automatic emergency flashing lights on emergency (Hazard) warning swiftly following vehicles involved in the event of sudden and prolonged braking.
